-This is Patuakhali, the green land of the ancient heritage of the sea bathing, green shaded Bengal.
The history of creation of Patuakhali district is very old. The first police station was established in the present Patuakhali district in 181 for the suppression and administrative convenience of the peasantry of South Bengal and in 179 AD it became a subdivision under the rule of English Viceroy Lord Ripon. Patuakhali has been called Patuakhali since the beginning of creation of the subdivision and Patuakhali Sadar upazila consists of Patuakhali town and its surrounding area covering an area of 362.62 sq km.
There are different doctrines behind the creation of Patuakhali name. Among them, Portuguese pirates used to plunder various villages in the SA region through the Bharani canal around Patuakhali town. The canal is named 'Patuar Canal' as a corruption of the Portuguese name. In the evolution of time, it is believed that the name Patuakhali was derived from Patuakhali.
